THE AVENA SERIES – HIDDEN, BROKEN AND FEARLESS

Hidden

Ebony has always known that she is different. Her violet eyes mark her out, and her protective parents have kept her in a gorgeous valley, home-schooled, safe from everything – almost as if she’s being hidden. But she’s changing: glowing, getting more and more beautiful, and stronger than anyone knows. Ebony can’t stay hidden forever, and when she meets complicated, intense Jordan, something explodes inside her – something that can be seen from the heavens; something that changes everything. Ebony is a stolen angel, concealed on Earth. Now the heavens have found her, they want her back.

Hidden Reviews on Goodreads

This is Marianne Curley’s best book and I’ve read them all. It is a hauntingly beautiful story of a girl named Ebony who knows she’s different, but because of the sheltered and scientific way she was raised, finds it extremely difficult to believe what the beautiful angel and her new friend Jordan are telling her. Her world is rocked at the very foundation when her parents finally tell her the truth. From then Ebony goes looking for answers, but the answers are more puzzling and literally out of this world.

Just like Marianne Curley’s previous books, every chapter in Hidden is as vivid as a scene in a movie. The characters are growing and changing before your eyes. Hidden is a well written and original story, which is rare to find among the angel fantasy genre.

I can’t wait for the next in the Avena Series.

Hidden refuses to follow the usual formulaic outline of a paranormal romance – the protagonists are strong and rather more mature than the average YA characters, the plot is amazingly paced, and the concept is cool and exciting. I think the book has a lot to offer. My favourite aspect is that it’s told in dual point-of-view. I think this story hinges on the reader being privy to what Jordan is experiencing, and I love it when I get to see both sides of the story.

Ebony is refreshingly intelligent and independent – she thinks her decisions through, is careful and never idiotically blunders her way into dangerous situations, and always has the welfare of those around her foremost in her mind. She is careful and initially distrusting of the strangers that claim they can help her, which I found more realistic than the blind faith some other YA heroines have. I think her sheltered lifestyle contributed to this, in part, and I really like this smart, conscientious girl.

I was fully expecting Ebony and Jordan, as the narrating protagonists, to randomly fall in love, as is the way of many YA novels and was pleasantly surprised at the romance in the book. I subsequently had my heart broken, and am still reeling from it all, but I love the clever way the author has handled the predictability of romance in YA, and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything falls out in future books.

I love the plot of the book; it seems well researched and is vividly painted. The fictional Australian setting is great, and I enjoy the idea that a little valley Australia can hide an angel so well! I did initially think that the book is too heavily foreshadowed, because I guessed so many things before they happened, but now that I have finished Hidden, I feel it was intentional on the author’s part. Readers almost always know what is going to happen before the protagonists and it added a sense of desperation because I wanted the characters to figure everything out before time ran out.

I can’t really praise Hidden any more – you’ll have to grab a copy and experience the awesome for yourself! I’m really looking forward to the follow-up books and following Ebony’s journey to find herself.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher for review.

Broken

Following the revelation that Ebony is an angel, and Nathaneal’s narrow victory in battle with Prince Luca, the two are enjoying their newfound love. But Ebony’s friend Jordan is bitterly angry that he has lost the girl of his dreams. Then suddenly Prince Michael arrives to arrest Nathaneal for breaking Avena’s law when he revealed his powers on Earth in his bid to save Ebony from Luca. Nathaneal is forced to return to Avena without Ebony to stand trial. Jordan seizes the opportunity to plant doubt in Ebony’s mind about Nathaneal and her own angelic nature. Desperate to find out what has happened to her adoptive parents, Ebony is persuaded by Jordan to believe that new teacher Mr Xavier, who claims to be her uncle, can introduce her to her real father. Disaster inevitably follows and Ebony finds herself at the centre of another epic battle in the realm of Avena itself. Fantastical and powerfully emotional, this angelic romance series is rapidly winning enthusiastic fans.

Broken Reviews on Goodreads

Broken is the much anticipated second book in the Avena series. It had me enthralled from page 1 and I was eagerly flipping the pages to find out what happens next. I love the character development in this book. It’s a great step up from book 1 and you find out much more about Ebony’s world. There’s an evil cliffhanger at the end. I NEED book 3 Fearless now!

‘Broken’ is a stunning sequel. I’ve just read it for the 2nd time in waiting for the 3rd instalment in the Avena series. The characters feel even stronger than the first. Their complexities really come to shine with the events of ‘Broken’, The relationships between Jordan, Nathaneal, and Ebony, develop in a way I didn’t expect, and kept me turning every page (even the 2nd time around). It’s refreshing to see in this genre. What’s also refreshing is Ebony herself. She shows strength in adversity, sticks to her convictions, yet she’s a vulnerable and whole-hearted young woman all the while. A truly well rounded character, and a female role model I’d like to see more of for this age bracket. The pace is spot on, and I was on the edge of my seat right up until the epic climax. I cannot wait for the next. Highly recommended.

Ebony, a girl who never quite believed she belonged, is coming to terms with the fact that she might be an angel. If only if it was as simple as that! There is a chance that those who believe she was switched at birth may be mistaken and her uniqueness has nothing to do with anything angelic. Her guardian and friend, Jordan, has his own agenda at hand and as much as he loves and cares about Ebony, his motives and emotions are clouding his judgement. Nathaniel (Thane) is forced to face the consequences of his actions in Hidden and other sinister forces are in play. There’s a lot going on and somehow Marianne Curley manages to work it all together in a way which works.

The narration switches between Ebony, Jordan and Thane. I always felt like the person who was currently giving their point of view was the right choice at the time. Each of the three has their problems to face during the novel and being able to see what they see, feel what they feel emotionally helps us understand. Ebony is refreshing in terms of her relationship with Thane. They have a love which may have spanned eras and there is the exhilaration at having found each other again but she remains practical. As much as she wants to be with Thane, she realizes that there are more important things that being together all the time. And the same goes for Thane. Their relationship is so important to him (as evident when he put his personal feelings and the protection of Ebony before what the Angels would consider to be what is best for Avena in Hidden) but so is the fate of his people and the fight against Prince Luca.

For each of these characters, their backgrounds are important to who the character is in the present day. Ebony is logical and has faith in that which she can prove. Her relationship with her horses and friends is important to her. Jordan is effected by the past and it impacts on his decisions. Thane’s upbringing and life in Avena is relevant to everything he does from Ebony to leading his people. I admire Ms. Curley for being consistent and acknowledging that to have her characters grow into the people they need to be, they have to know where they’re coming from.

Love triangles are not usually my cup of tea but perhaps that is because I have not read many which are as well thought out as the one between Thane, Ebony and Jordan. There is reason and rationale behind why these characters have the feelings they have and as a reader, I could understand the justification behind the emotions. Ebony and Jordan being in such close proximity and the guardian bond working overtime brings a closeness to the two which makes sense. As does the mind link between Thane and Ebony and hearing the passion Thane has when speaking about it with his closest friends.

Broken is a great addition to the Australian YA scene. Not only authored by an Aussie, Broken is mostly set in The Snowy Mountains and has an authentic Australian feel to it. The scenery was beautifully described, and I loved reading this book and being familiar with the region in which it was set. That said – the parts of Broken set in Avena or Skade were equally as impressive with their settings. The angelic realm of Avena, with the colours and unearthly way in which things work, as well as Skade, the place for souls and dark angels, had a certain vivid quality with their descriptions.

If you enjoyed Hidden (Avena #1), then I think you would love Broken. It has everything the first book had and more. And for those unfamiliar with the series, I recommend Hidden to people who enjoy well-rounded characters and great writing and a plot which will keep you guessing.

Fantastic ending for the Avena trilogy! This last book truly convinced me of the love story that existed throughout the first two novels, (and even almost made me sympathize for Luca) and it made for a heart pumping finale that makes the whole series well worth reading. Marianne does not disappoint.

  1. one question marianne, books Avena series consists of: Hidden, Broken and Fearless, that I have very clear, but I wonder if it also published the Samandra publisher, since I like to read in Spanish. Ah, wilderness I love your books when I started reading Old Magic I could not separate, further it may sound ridiculous but I felt there was a strong connection between Jarrod Thornton and it started to feel attraction towards him, and go did not help me get over her deep green eyes (I have a weakness for green eyes).
The same thing happened to me, this sounds even more ridiculous, as I read that Arkarian was sympathetic, sexy and tender me completely forget about Jarrod (Nor helped me too sos colo violet eyes). Well I hope sincerely response and also wait with a yearning The Avena Series books.

    1. Hi Daniela, I have a weakness for green eyes too. That’s probably why I have so many green-eyed main characters in my books. Thanks for writing and telling me how much you loved my four books that have been translated into Spanish by Salamandra Publishers. When my new series, starting with Hidden, was published, I had hoped Salamandra would publish it in Spanish, as they had had enormous success with Old Magic, and The Guardians of Time, but unfortunately, that has not been the case and at present I have not received an offer to publish from any Spanish publishers. Hopefully one day Salamandra, or another Spanish publisher, will decide to publish The Avena Series, and I will definitely let all my Spanish-reading fans know! Don’t give up hope. I’m not.

I wish I had better news regarding a German translation of the Avena Series, but so far no German publisher has decided to translate, not even Hanser, my publisher who had enormous success with Old Magic and the Guardians of Time. I hope that one day I will have better news. When that happens, I will put a GIANT notice up on my website and Facebook page. Thank you for asking. It might be a good idea to drop an email to Hanser or to Bloomsbury UK and ask them if they can make a German translation happen.

I started with your guardians of time trilogy and fell in love with your writing style. For weeks I have had dreams of arkarian and his beautiful eyes. I was hooked to your books from the day I started and just can’t wait for more. Old magic was again an exceptional book. When I saw the next trilogy, the avena, I knew I had to read it in a marathon so thought of waiting till fearless came. But couldn’t wait any longer and finished both the first books. Waiting with bated breath for fearless and many more trilogies from you. You rock!

I want to thank you for writing The Guardians of Time trilogy; it turned up at just the right time and has been a favourite of mine for years now. The complex plot revealed through alternating perspectives captured my interests, and I stormed through the trilogy in less than a week. The voices, in particular, are so rich and personalised.

I wondered if you had any advice for novice writers? How do you make such complex plot lines seem so effortless? Any advice would be greatly appreciated (and treasured!)

I wish you every success for your latest book.

    1. Hi Marianne
Thank you for loving my Guardians of Time trilogy, and for letting me know how it turned up at just the right time for you.

My general advice for novice writers is to read widely and experiment in styles and genres until you find your voice and the genre you are most comfortable to write for. This is important because if you are not loving what you do writing can become hard work and stifle the free-flow of your thoughts. Learning to write can be a long process. I’ve been writing for twenty years and I’m still learning, so don’t wait until you have taken all the writing courses you can find, but start plotting that book you know you have inside you, and write the first draft with the thought that no one will be reading it. Let the words flow from your heart. Say whatever it is you want your characters to say. There will be plenty of time to edit and revise after that first draft is written.

As for complex plots, I can only speak for myself. I plan my books as much as I can, starting with research. You can find my Writing Process in a blog post on my website using the arrow on left side of the screen.

All the best for your future success.

  12. Hi Marianne, I absolutely loved your Guardians of Time trilogy (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t read a lot, so your books must be good). I have a story of my own to tell.

I first came across the series when I was 12/13 and read through the series with eagerness, but somehow I managed to lose the books (I blame my mum for giving them to the charity shop). In the time that went by, my only memory of the series was the cover of one of the books, but unfortunately I forgot the name. Flash forward to when I was 19 and I had an urge to read the series again, but two summer holidays went by and I couldn’t track the series down. Finally this summer I used all of my brain (and the internet) to find the series and instantly read through the whole series.

One thing I love is how detailed and vivid your descriptions of the characters and settings are. It meant that the same images I created in my head from your words when I was 12 were replicated exactly now, in a nostalgic sense. I’ve come to terms that a 4th is probably out of the running, but I would love for a film(s) to be made out of the trilogy (and I know I share that thought with others). Have you ever been approached with that idea in mind?

    Thanks very much,
    Nisal from London

    1. Hi Nisal

Thank you for your comments and letting me know how you came about reading the Guardians of Time twice and how you enjoyed the second read in a nostalgic kind of way. To answer some of your questions, firstly, I’ve been approached a couple of times by Hollywood, the first was by the WB (warner bros) to create a TV series. An option was taken out, a director was hired and script writer, but in the end they said the constantly changing sets would prove too costly for their budget at that time. A pilot script was made and it was lovely to visualise these beloved characters coming to life on the screen, but unfortunately it didn’t pan out. The second was to make three major motion pictures. A misunderstanding between my agent and the producer brought an unfortunate end to that option. But I keep hopeful and one never knows. As for a fourth book, well, all going well, I am planning to write it next year.

      All the best

Have you any more news of the trilogy possibly being made into films? I have just finished reading these books again after first reading them as a teenager (i’m 25 now). I love them so much! Arkarian would be amazing to see on the screen. I cried at the ending of the third book…I would be balling at the cinema.

The Hunger Games and Maze Runner got made into films…it would be awesome if the Guardians of Time could be too.

Unfortunately, though the books have come close to being made into films, and once into a TV series, it has not eventuated yet. But, I never say never. Now that I’m writing Guardians of Time Book Four, all going well, the books may attract the attention of a film producer again one day. Who knows? Making films is not something authors can do on their own. The costs to produce films is astronomical and far out of the reach of most authors, not counting the expertise required.

        Thanks for asking.

It is lovely to hear from you again and to hear you are still writing. Thank you for writing with a lovely update. I hope your sister enjoys my books too, and as you say, the characters stick with her. It’s amazing how a good character can become a part of your life and that’s the honour of being a writer for young people, that the words I write can influence or enhance a person’s life, give them memories that will stay with them like a good friend they had, a friend they can remember and look back on. Hopefully it will always be in a good way.

All the best with your own writing and whatever career you choose to make yours. If you should become a published novelist, I would be thrilled to read it.

My little sister is enjoying the books the way I’d hoped! It really is amazing how a character can be a friend and a source of wisdom, you learn from their mistakes. You definitely inspired me to write, your words had a different feel to other books that made me want to pick up a pen even in primary school. I must say writing is unlike anything else though, it’s so honest. When putting the story down you feel everything the character does. I remember you telling me you wrote when you were unwell and recently I’ve found myself writing a lot more as I’ve been unwell myself. It’s not just your books that have inspired me but you yourself and the strength that can be found in words.

Well if there’s any incentive to finish my book that is definitely one! I would be thrilled to be published and I’d be honoured if you’d read it.

I wish I could tell you it will be soon, but I am in the writing phase and this could take some time, but as soon as I have news about a new book I will post a notice on my website. I am currently working on two books, one is the fourth book to the Guardians of Time, the other is too early to talk about, but both are in the works and hopefully some good news later in the year. Thank you for your truly motivating words.

Wow! They haven’t been out long in French, thanks for letting me know you loved them, which kind of means the translation went well, which is great to hear too. Regarding when Fearless will be available in French, all I know at this stage is that ADA, the publisher, purchased the rights to all three books at the same time. So they are planning to release Fearless, unfortunately, I don’t know when. Of course ADA publishers will have that information, so if there is a way to contact them, maybe by email, or ask at a book store, they might be able to tell you. In the meantime, if I find out the date, I’ll let you know.

    1. Hi Emilie
I’ve received a few questions from Canada now asking for the date of the release of Fearless in French. I have been trying to ascertain this for you all, but so far the publisher has not replied to me. The publisher is the one who will know what date they have set for FEARLESS to be released in Canada. They are called Ada Editions and their Facebook page contact details are:

      Éditions AdA
      @editionsada

You might be able to find out by asking at one of your local bookshops to look it up on their computer database, or approach the editors themselves.

If I find out, I’ll let you know. Thank you for letting me know that you love the series so far.

      Yours

  20. Dear Marianne,

I feel I have to express something in here, and I do feel a bit ashamed for saying this, but, until I was about 16 years of age (~2001), I did not read much (unless it was for school, and even there it was mostly half-hearted reading, I have to admit that.). At some point I think I accompanied my sister to the book shop and I saw the German version of “Old Magic” in the shelves and immediately felt the need to read it. Well, what can I say? At one point I couldn’t resist any longer and bought it, and it changed my life…

I really loved your writing style; it was (and still is) very unique. And I really felt I liked the characters… From then on, I became more and more interested in reading, but I will never forget that it was your book which opened this whole new world to me. I am currently reading my second book of yours, the German version of “The Named” from the “Guardians Of Time”. I cannot wait until I can continue on with the rest of the series, I feel the book’s so thrilling and full of great opportunities to dream myself away… It is even hard for me not to go on reading right now, as I totally want to know how it’s going to go on. And I find it spectacular that you are even writing a fourth book for the series :).

So, that said thank you so much for bringing this world to me. I just couldn’t stop myself from letting you know :)! I hope you are having a great day today.

Thank you for letting me know how my first book Old Magic helped you take that step into the wonderful world of reading. And I am thrilled beyond words that you are now reading the Guardians of Time. I appreciate you letting me know, especially now as I am back in that very same world after so long.

I hope you have a great day too.

  21. Dear Marianne,

I wanted to say thank you for your amazing books.

I read them the first time when I was still a teenager and remember how hooked I was and how I couldn’t stop thinking about the story when I wasn’t able to read. Your books were one of those kinds, where you couldn’t stop reading and when you finished, you didn’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
In short: I loved every page and it was almost heartbreaking when I was finished.
I am 25 years now and I developed a habit to reread my favorite books, which I did with each of yours about 6 times (except your latest trilogy but I’m working on it). Your unique story and writing style inspired me to write myself, if only just for fun (and in a different genre).

Since the Guardians of time trilogy are my favorite books of yours, I cannot express how happy I am to hear that you are about to extend the series with a fourth book (or maybe even a new trilogy? *hope*), especially since I felt like there was not explained everything in the final third book (e.g. I had the feeling that Dartemis always hinted that there might be more behind Jimmys facade than it seemed; or how live on earth will continue after mixing up the worlds and Matt’s and Dartemis’ role in all of this). It would be even exciting to see Isabell, Ethan & Co. on Tv (even though I’d prefer a TV show over a movie since the story is so complex and versatile to cover everything in a movie).

Anyway, what I actually wanted to tell you is, please continue writing such wonderful stories and encouraging and inspiring people all around the world to read books and write stories themselves. It is such a great gift you got and you’re making the best out of it. Please stay the way you are.

    Your fan,
    Elena

p.S.: Please forgive possible grammar and spelling mistakes, as English is only my second language.

Thank you for your special words to me. I appreciated you telling me how my books, especially the Guardians of Time series has touched your heart and inspired you. It’s readers like you who help me wake up every morning with a smile and enthusiasm for the new day, the day that is full of possibilities (writing ones especially!). I have also always believed there is more to the GoT story than I was able to put into the first three books. In fact, I had always hoped to write a fourth book, but after writing The Key, I became ill with bone marrow cancer and then a fall where I broke several vertebra in my back. It was years later before I could find the concentration to start writing again. I wasn’t ready to return to the GoT then, not until I had proved to myself that my writing was of a publishable standard again. I did that with the Avena Series (Hidden, Broken and Fearless) and now I am excited to be back in Angel Falls with the Named. I am almost finished the second draft of Book Four and will soon be starting to look for a publisher. I will keep you informed through my website blog and Facebook.

      Thanks again for your comments.

  22. Dear Marianne,

I love your books especially Old Magic and the Guardians of Times Triology. I read Old Magic in German for the first time when I was a teenager and was thrilled. I imediately looked for more of your books and found the guardians of time triologie. It offered a whole new world and its characters where just as fantastic. All your characters seemed so amazingly real and their actions were always comprehensible, which is really important to me in a book. The character development was facinating, there was no simple black and white and good and bad painting, a thrilling storyline with suprising twists and turns all packaged in a beautifully decribed world (medieval or fictional). I have read your books again and again (by now in english) over the years and and recommended them to family and friends who all enjoyed them very much as well. I have read many books in my life but yours are still on the top of my favorite books list and I am very much looking forward to the forth book of the guardians of time story.
You have a unique style of writing and I want to thank you deeply for the joy that your books have brought me!!!!
Unfortunately I don´t find time for reading anymore. But over this problem I discovered my passion for audiobooks. They are just perfect when you have tired eyes from sitting in front of a screen all day or when you have to do tedious manual labour. Therefore I have been checking out the audible store for your books for years always hoping that one day I would find them there. But until now I had no luck. Why is that? Is there any chance that your books will be published as audiobooks one day? That would be really great!

    Kind regards

    1. Hi Juliane

Thanks for your lovely comment and for your query on audio books, it’s up to the publisher to have audio books made of my books if it’s in the contracts, and since I’m not sure, I will check. I do know that audio books are becoming very big things, so you’re definitely not alone in turning to them. I hope my books will become audio as well as the other formats before too long, and I will post a note up on my Website and Facebook page when this occurs.

  23. Hello!

I was going through all of my books on my bookshelf to make sure I had them all added to my GoodReads account and to start reviewing all of the books I’ve read and I rediscovered your Guardians of Time trilogy and had such a nostalgic throwback with them. I got all three of these books when they were first released years ago and adored them. I had multiple bookmarks throughout all three with my favorite quotes and parts of the story. I went through a lot of them and it made me smile. I read them so much as a kid that I wore most of them out so much that they almost look ancient by now! I just wanted to drop in and say home much I loved the Guardians of Time trilogy and your book Old Magic. These were just a few of the books that really got me into reading.

    Thank You!

Thank you for this message, telling me how much the Guardians of Time and Old Magic meant to you and by the sounds of things, still do. I couldn’t be happier to hear this, those books have meant a lot to many of my readers and to me too! Your message is good timing as I am in the editing stages of Guardians of Time Book Four and have plans for a series of books or possibly novellas on the lives of the Royals like Lord Penbarin and King Richard and Lady Arabella. I hope when the time comes nearer you will join me in spreading the word that The Guardians of Time are back, and back in a big way.

  24. Hello! Let me start off by saying that I read Old Magic when I was ten years old, and I immediately fell in love with it. To this day it is one of my favorite books and one of the reasons younger me got so into reading and writing. Now I’m seventeen, and I’m doing a project for one of my writing classes that requires an interview with a published author, and I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions?

My first question is, of course, where do you get your inspiration? The plot of Old Magic was very interestingly done, and it’s not very often that tropes like time travel are mixed with the fantasy genre. The plot itself was very unique, one I’ve personally never seen before.

You write the story alternating between Jarrod and Kate’s points of view. I think it was important to see the story through both of their eyes, but was it easier or harder to write like that?

You managed to make the book revolve heavily around Jarrod and Kate’s relationship while it was platonic and while it was romantic. Both aspects of their relationship was very important throughout the story. Did you decide to save the romance for the end of the book or did it evolve naturally as you wrote it?

Regarding the above question: when you write, do you typically have a very solid plan in mind and write from that, or do you start with a small idea and let the story change naturally as you write each part?

Thank you so much for your time! When I got this book I stayed up all night to read it, and I must have read it a dozen times since then. Thank you for writing such a great piece of literature, it truly changed my childhood.

    1. Hello Adam

It’s great to hear from you. Thank you for letting me know how my first book Old Magic lead you into the world of reading when you were only ten years old, and how it’s been a favourite of yours for all these years. I would be happy to answer your questions. It’s no problem at all.

Question 1. Where do you get your inspiration?
Answer 1. Normally, my inspiration could come from a song, a photograph, a book, landscapes, an overheard conversation, almost anything, anywhere, at any time. But my inspiration for Old Magic was more specific. It came from a day I spent in a rainforest not far from home. I was having a picnic with friends in an area of The Dorrigo National Park called the Never Never when a mist rolled through the trees and over a field towards us. It created such an enchanting atmosphere that it captured my imagination and ideas sprung to mind. I sat at that picnic table writing notes as a plot began to unfold in my head. By the time we packed up to go home I knew that I wanted to write a book about a strong female main character who lived in a national park, could work magic comfortably, and was kind of an outcast in the community. The boy would be extremely uncomfortable with the idea of magic, and had no idea he had powers of his own. And in the mix between them I wanted there to be a curse.

Question 2. You write the story alternating between Jarrod and Kate’s points of view. I think it was important to see the story through both of their eyes, but was it easier or harder to write like that?
Answer 2. I found writing in alternate POVs easier and, as you point out, important for this book. I have since written all eight of my books in this style. In the year 2000, when Old Magic’s first edition appeared, I believe I was one of the first authors to introduce alternate POVs to Young Adult books. When writing solely through one POV, I couldn’t show what was happening when the two main characters were not together, and sometimes there was vital information to show that I couldn’t. I also liked giving the reader the thoughts and emotions of both mains.

Question 3. You managed to make the book revolve heavily around Jarrod and Kate’s relationship while it was platonic and while it was romantic. Both aspects of their relationship was very important throughout the story. Did you decide to save the romance for the end of the book or did it evolve naturally as you wrote it?
Answer 3. I wanted the relationship between Jarrod and Kate to develop at a gradual pace as they learned more about each other. I wanted them to like what they were seeing in the other person and begin to care and fear for them. The love Kate and Jarrod shared was stronger for the way it developed over time.

Question 4. Regarding the above question: when you write, do you typically have a very solid plan in mind and write from that, or do you start with a small idea and let the story change naturally as you write each part?
Answer 4. I’m quite a fan of planning and I will prepare a solid plan of the plot, chapter by chapter, as well as character breakdowns of a page or two on all the major characters, smaller breakdowns on the supporting characters. I like to know where I’m going from beginning, middle and end. But, there have been times when my characters led me into a different direction and I don’t mind going off-plan if it works out for the best.
Thank you so much for your time! When I got this book I stayed up all night to read it, and I must have read it a dozen times since then. Thank you for writing such a great piece of literature, it truly changed my childhood.

It was my pleasure. Thank you, Adam. All the best.

  25. Hi, I absolutely loved Hidden and was wondering if there is a free online version of Broken and Fearless as I don’t seem to find it anywhere and can’t pay online or find the series in paperback. It would honestly be amazing to continue the series because the first book captivated me and I couldn’t take me eyes of it. Please reply if you find a free copy. I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks for writing and letting me know how you’re trying to find Broken and Fearless. I’m not sure where you’re looking, but online bookstores definitely are the place to get an instant download of Broken or Fearless. They also sell the paperbacks and will deliver them fairly promptly. I could be more specific if I knew where you are from, Australia, American or the UK, for instance. The publisher also has available copies. On my website there are links to some of the online bookstores where you can also order a paperback copy. Here is a link to the Avena Series page on my publisher’s website.

I don’t recommend the free online versions, they are rip-offs and not formatted correctly, not to mention they’re illegal.

      Good luck.

  26. HI Marianne.. I’m not sure if you still read these comments.. I have only just found this page. I read Old Magic and then the first three of The Guardians Of Time tetralogy when I was in school and they honestly transported me to another world. I was suffering from a lot of child abuse in the household and one of the few things I was allowed to have in my room were books. I spent hours with Kate and Jarrod, Matt and Ethan, Isabel and Arkarian.. even Lathenia was an amazing character with the black dogs that terrified me! I just wanted to thank you for whisking me away from the world that I felt so alone in and giving me friends with magical powers, worlds with amazing views and futures that didn’t seem so bleak.
