Fearless

Interview by Paula Xiberras of The Tasmanian Times, dated July 31st, 2015

The name ‘Curley’ means ‘strong man’ but in this case the name refers to a strong woman and to borrow the title of her most recent novel a ‘fearless’ one at that.

Marianne Curley has never been to Tasmania but her family has and Marianne would love to.

We are having a chat about Marianne’s new novel ‘Fearless’. The third in the Avena series detailing the romance between angels Nathaneal and Ebony.

Marianne says the inspiration behind the books was to bring to the supernatural genre a different kind of angelic experience. Marianne was alarmed at all the dark supernatural stories with attacking angels and wanted something more positive that portrayed ‘angels as beautiful beings’.

How does Marianne explain the popularity of the supernatural genre? Marianne believes that young people sometimes feel they are on the outer and just want to be accepted. Nowadays there are further problems for young people, like bullying to deal with. Paranormal fiction richly populated with an array of fantastic creatures that show individuality, uniqueness and difference are acceptable and can be celebrated, as often these characters have amazing super powers. It is these fantastical, superhero features that allows Marianne to give readers some escapism without limits, even worldly ones! And a romance involving a strong heroine.

Marianne is well known for her very visual writing and who can argue when reading her imaginative description of a gate in the sky composed of a human body, or so accurately describes the doubling over pain that an angel goes through as her wings come in. Marianne is an avid science reader and subscriber to scientific journals and says that the descriptions in her books are always scientifically based. Marianne’s writing about angels, too, is informed by their biblical realisation.

Marianne says she can be inspired in her writing at any time, even while brushing her teeth! She keeps pen and notepads near her bed as she is known to wake her husband from slumber, sometimes by both literally and metaphorically, having a light bulb moment at 2 am!

As to her heroines pain on getting those angel wings, she says from her own experience of experiencing treatment for a medical condition that sometimes we need to know pain to be able to appreciate the good things.

When she was in her previous life as an adult TAFE teacher Marianne started thinking if she could be a success at writing and realised after doing some creative writing courses that she could actually write! Next for Marianne are two contemporary stand-alone young adult novels and then she says she will be back to the paranormal genre that she loves

The ability of Marianne’s fantasy novels to reach reader’s reality is indicated by an Instagram name and a pet dog that assume the name Arkarian, one of her most popular characters (from the Guardian’s of Time series).

Fearless is out now published by Bloomsbury.

ANNOUNCEMENT – FEARLESS BLOG TOUR

Fearless Blog Tour Banner Au and UK

Hi everyone

My Australian and UK Blog Tour for FEARLESS begins on July 13 and runs through until July 17. Some wonderful bloggers are hosting this for me and I’m looking forward to dropping by at each of their sites.

So what can you expect? Well, my first stop is on July 13 at the wonderful blog site of www.speconspecfic.com/ where I will be revealing the Fearless Book Trailer. I’m excited about this as the trailer was run as an exercise in a class of brave university students at the University of Technology, Sydney. There were so many amazing submissions and the choice of the winning trailer was extremely hard to select. Just so you know, I didn’t have the final say, but I love what the winner has done and I hope you do too. Thank you to all those students who devoted their time and expertise to participate.

My next stop on July 14 is going to be interesting in a completely different way. This is where I will reveal a chapter from The Avena Series that was never published. Originally it was to be a Prologue at the beginning of HIDDEN. But now it’s called “The Birth of Ebrielle”, and you will be able to read it at the UK blog site of: http://escapismfromreality.blogspot.co.uk.

On July 15 I have a Guest Blog Post on two sites: http://paranormal-angel.blogspot.com.au/ and http://paranormalangel.wordpress.com/ where I will have a lovely chat about . . . hmm . . . something close to just about everyone’s hearts.

On July 16 I will be a guest at the UK blog site of  http://fictionfascinationco.ipage.com/ where I will be answering Top 10 Random Facts about Fearless, and well, some of these random facts relate to the entire series of HIDDEN and BROKEN too, as well as a few about me.

And on my last stop on July 17, I will have another exclusive story for you. This one is called: “A Twist of Fate”, and you will find it at: www.behind-the-pages.com

So please drop by. And as always I’d love to hear your comments. You can contact me right here on my website or send me an email at:  marianne.curley7@gmail.com.

Three Weeks to FEARLESS

The Avena Series, Hidden, Broken, Fearless

The Avena Series, Hidden, Broken, Fearless

Hi everyone

It’s three weeks until FEARLESS is released and I’m very excited to be at this point. To celebrate and put everyone in the mood, in the next few weeks I will be releasing two chapters that you will not find in any of the three books. One will be from Nathaneal’s viewpoint when he was a child on Avena, while the other is from Ebony’s father’s point of view on the day their house burned to the ground. I will have more information on these chapters in the lead up to the FEARLESS release, so please stay tuned.

To catch everyone up, here is a brief summary of what the Avena Series is about.

The Avena Series is the story of an angel named Ebrielle who was abducted at birth, stripped of her name, hidden in a secluded valley on Earth, and raised to believe she is an average girl. But in her heart she knows she is different. How different puts her on a course of discovery, catapulted into action when she meets a troubled boy named Jordan. Their bond alerts the heavens, specifically her eternal soul-mate Nathaneal, a prince in the world of angels who has never given up searching for her, and unfortunately also the dark angel Lucien, whose obsession for Ebrielle brings the young loves and all the worlds of Earth to the brink of devastation.

This is also a good time to remind anyone who would like to attend the fabulous Book Launch that Dymocks in Sydney’s CBD is hosting for the FEARLESS release next month. The launch will be held on the 18th of July at 11 am. I couldn’t be happier to be back in my home state for this, and I would love to see you there.

My Most Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Everyone

My writing career is going on fifteen years now and during that time I have been asked hundreds of questions in interviews with magazines, newspapers, writer’s groups and the like. Inevitably some questions are the same, again and again, and this gave me the idea to select a few of those questions and put my replies up on my blog, which will simultaneously be posted on my new website: http://www.mariannecurley7.com.

The first question and answer is below, but first I have good news to share about The Avena Series. About six weeks ago, I handed the third and final book to The Avena Series in to my publisher Bloomsbury. It’s called FEARLESS, and I have just heard that my editor loved it. Yeessss!!! Yeessss! Yehooo! This is me, the closest I can get to jumping up and down!

Ask any author and they will tell you it’s always a nervous time waiting for your editor’s decision and subsequent comments for improvement. Believe me, there will be revisions, but that’s okay. I don’t mind revisions. The hard work I can take, knowing the editor’s objective and professional views will lead to improvements that will make FEARLESS a fantastic finale. I’m actually looking forward to sinking back into Ebony and Nathaneal and Jordan’s hearts, their minds and the worlds they come from.

I will keep you posted on completion and publication dates as they are confirmed to me.

So here is one of my most frequently asked question:

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

Answer:

I remember enjoying writing stories when I was a young girl, eight, nine and older, but it wasn’t until my early thirties when I started writing with the idea of publication one day. Up until then I hadn’t thought of writing a story someone else might want to read. I was content to read, the bigger the book the better.

When I was growing up we didn’t have any books at home, except for a set of encyclopaedias to help us do our homework. They were amazing books, especially for children, and I got a lot out of reading them. But we didn’t have fiction books. And once I’d read “Oliver Twist”, I was hooked. I became very familiar with my school libraries.

When in my early thirties, I had just started back in the work force after my three children had all started school. I was teaching various classes in Office Administration and Computer Studies at an adult technical college part time, and though I enjoyed teaching I felt there was something else I wanted to do with my life. I enrolled in one writing course after another, entered a few short story competitions, and from the encouragement I received from my tutors began writing manuscripts of around 50-80 thousand words. I remember being surprised at how wonderful it felt to complete my first full-length manuscript. My first book was a romance and was promptly rejected by romance book publishers. But that did nothing to dissuade me. I penned another seven romances before I finally got the message that romance writing was not my forte. (It’s harder than it looks!) My daughters, who were at the time young teens and voracious readers, asked me to write a book for their age. I ran through an idea with them at the dinner table and when they gave me their excited approval I went ahead and wrote a dystopian novel I called ‘Enerith’. It wasn’t published, and neither were the two that came after it, but I have not looked back. I knew then the type of books that suited my style were paranormal fantasies in a modern setting for young adults.

‘Old Magic’ was my fourth try at a young adult novel. It was sold within three weeks to the highest bidder at a London mini-auction, and translated into more than a dozen international languages.

‘Old Magic’ has not stopped spinning its magic for me yet. I hope to have exciting news to tell you in my next blog.

Until next time, take care of each other.

Marianne
