about the author

Marianna Curley

Marianne Curley is an accomplished Australian author whose career spans over 25 years, marked by both literary success and extraordinary personal resilience. First published in the year 2000, she quickly captured readers’ imaginations with her compelling storytelling and richly drawn characters. Her writing, often rooted in fantasy and the supernatural, resonates deeply with young adult audiences for its emotional depth and authenticity.

But behind the pages of her books lies a journey of immense courage and perseverance. In 2004, Marianne faced a life-threatening diagnosis of Myelofibrosis, a rare bone marrow cancer. Given only weeks to live, she underwent an intensive stem-cell transplant that ultimately saved her life. However, just as she was about to leave the hospital after three months of treatment, a fall resulted in a catastrophic bone crush injury, a consequence of the extreme chemotherapy she had endured. The injury left her with a curved spine and shoulders, and in the first year alone, she lost eight inches in height. The physical and emotional toll of her condition made it impossible to write for several years, and it would take eight long years before she was able to publish again.

Despite these immense setbacks, Marianne’s love for storytelling never faded. Her determination saw her return to the literary world, where she continued to build on her already successful career. Over the years, she has published ten books, including her latest novel, The Impossible Spell. Her works have been published internationally, and her ability to create emotionally layered narratives has earned her a dedicated global readership.

Tragedy struck again just two years ago when a tornado destroyed her home and everything in it. Yet, even in the face of such devastation, Marianne continued to write, embodying the strength and resilience that define both her life and her stories.

Now living with the physical scars of her past but fueled by an indomitable spirit, Marianne Curley remains a powerful voice in young adult fantasy fiction. Her life’s journey, marked by survival, recovery, and reinvention, infuses her writing with a rare authenticity and emotional depth that inspires readers worldwide.
